Beta

This is a new service and pages are being tested and improved.

Overview

The breadcrumb component shows users where they are in the site structure and provides quick navigation back to higher-level pages.

It displays a hierarchical trail from the home page to the current location.

Use breadcrumbs on every page except the home page to help users understand the site structure.

Example

A breadcrumb navigation showing three items: ‘Home,’ ‘Get involved,’ and ‘Connect and contribute,’ separated by right-pointing chevrons. The first two items are underlined, indicating they are links.

When to use

Breadcrumbs are especially helpful when users:

  • land on a deep page from search engines and need to understand where they are
  • want to navigate back to a parent section

Place all services (like booking tools, fast stream home, CIAF tool) directly under the home page even if they relate to a specific website area. This keeps breadcrumbs simple and makes it clear they are in a service.

This is the same approach as GOV.UK has to services and forms.

When not to use

Don’t use the breadcrumb component on the home page.

Content notes

For services placed under home, provide clear navigation back to the relevant section within the page content using contextual links.
