Beta

This is a new service and pages are being tested and improved.

Overview

The skip to main content link helps keyboard users bypass navigation elements and jump directly to the main page content.

It remains hidden until users press Tab, then appears as the first focusable element.

Use skip links on every page to meet accessibility requirements and improve keyboard navigation.

Example

Banner with the text ‘Skip to main content.’

When to use

Use skip links on every page with navigation elements to:

  • meet WCAG accessibility guidelines and government accessibility standards
  • help keyboard and screen reader users navigate efficiently
  • allow users to bypass repetitive header content and navigation

When not to use

Skip links should be included on every page. Avoid:

  • making skip links permanently visible (they’re intended for keyboard users)
  • placing them anywhere other than first in the tab order
  • using multiple skip links when one clear path exists

Content notes

Keep skip link text simple and consistent: ‘Skip to main content’.
