Beta

This is a new service and pages are being tested and improved.

Overview

The headline navigational component displays a link with an optional content type caption and description text to help users choose the link appropriate to them.

They work best when users need context to decide between different pages or tasks.

Use navigation links when you want to present options with clear explanations rather than a simple list of links.

When to use

Use headline navigation links when:

  • you want to help users choose between distinct pages or tasks, like on a landing page
  • each option needs an explanation beyond just a page title
  • you want to group related links
  • users benefit from scanning multiple options before deciding

When not to use

Don’t use navigation links when users don’t need extra context.

Use a list of links when:

  • you’re presenting links which don’t need descriptions
  • users already understand the options

Use inline links when:

  • you’re linking within body text or instructions
  • the link supports the current task rather than offering alternative paths

Content notes

You should only use headline navigation on Flexible Layout pages. This might be for a homepage, a dashboard with links to relevant parts or a section index with grouped links.

It works best at 33% width.

Write clear, specific content that helps users make decisions. The caption should be selected from the list of content types supported on projectdelivery.gov.uk.

Link titles should be action-focused that clearly describe the destination or task.

Descriptions should explain what users will do or find.
