GPD-PN 05/26: Programme and project directors: role, importance and arrangements
Information and advice on appointing programme and project directors in government
This policy note sets out the expectations for government organisations when appointing programme and project directors.
Details
This Government Project Delivery policy note sets out the arrangements for appointing programme and project directors across government. It clarifies the distinctions between programme and project director types, defines core accountability and appointment transparency requirements, and describes the responsibilities of departments and the Centre in appointing, accrediting and supporting programme and project directors.
The policy note introduces a clearer tiering of programme and project director roles across three levels of project delivery:
- Government Major Projects Portfolio (including government mega projects)
- Departmental Major Projects (DMP)
- Other Major Projects Portfolio (OMP)
Each tier carries different appointment processes, accreditation expectations and accountability arrangements. The role of the programme and project director itself is unchanged.
