Government Project Delivery updates Project Delivery Standard to version 2.1

Today, Government Project Delivery has updated the Government Project Delivery Standard to version 2.1. This update helps make the standard clearer and better aligned with wider government guidance, including The Teal Book.
The standard sets out how government departments and arm’s length bodies should plan, manage and deliver portfolios, programmes and projects. It helps make sure public money is spent wisely and that projects deliver value for citizens.
What’s changed
Version 2.1 keeps the same purpose and scope but includes several improvements:
- clearer references to policy and evaluation
- a new description of the senior officer accountable for project delivery
- key roles like portfolio director, programme manager and project manager are now mandatory
- new clauses on transitioning, using and disposing of solutions, supporting The Teal Book
- more references to The Teal Book throughout the document
Why it matters
Functional standards help government work better. They support good decisions, strong governance and better results for the public.
This update makes the Project Delivery Standard clearer and more useful. It helps project delivery professionals understand their roles and responsibilities and improves how projects are run across government.
This update reflects our commitment to continuous improvement and clarity in how we deliver projects across government. The functional standard for project delivery remains a cornerstone of effective delivery, and version 2.1 ensures it stays aligned with evolving best practice.

Support for delivery professionals
Two key resources are available to help organisations and practitioners use the standard:
