The Project delivery functional standard is the approved and mandated reference for all government departments and arm’s length bodies, and is designed to be applicable to all types of government projects, programmes and portfolios.

This functional standard is part of a suite of management standards that promotes consistent and coherent ways of working across government, and provides a stable basis for assurance, risk management and capability improvement.

The full suite of standards, and associated guidance, can be found at GOV.UK government functional standards.

It contains 8 main elements:

  1. About this government functional standard
  2. Principles for directing and managing portfolios, programmes and projects
  3. Overview and context of portfolio, programme and project management
  4. Governance and roles of portfolios, programmes and projects
  5. Portfolio management
  6. Programme and project management
  7. Planning and control practices
  8. Solution delivery practices

The Continuous Improvement Assessment Framework for Project Delivery and Tool allows for government organisations to assess where they are against the standard and to then plan targeted continuous improvement activities.
